WCKC Membership,

It is with great sadness that I report the passing of one of our longest standing members.
Graham Moffat passed away on Saturday January 28th as the result of a head injury caused by a fall at home a few weeks ago.
Graham has been a constant presence at GMR and WCKC for over a decade.  He’s filled every volunteer position available, from Corner Worker, to Grid Marshal, to Starter, to Race Director. He has been one of the single largest contributors to keeping us racing at GMR since the facility opened in 2001.
As if all of that wasn’t enough, last year he took on the role of Facility Supervisor.  He worked tirelessly all year to help maintain the site.  Everything was always kept neat and tidy, whatever needed paint was painted, and the black berries were kept at bay.
Without a doubt, Graham contributed to all of our participation whether we knew it or not.   And in all of this time, he never asked for any credit.
I know that personally, I won’t find it the same without him marching around the paddock enforcing rules or running the grid or looking for flaggers.
Graham, you will be missed.

New TKM 4-Cycle Class for 2011 at WCKC

The West Coast Kart Club has approved of switching World Formula Medium to TKM K4S.  In April 2011, the Formula TKM 4-stroke class will debut at the first club race, marking a significant departure from the historic low powered 4-stroke classes.  Unlike previous class introductions, this class was not introduced by a specific dealer or the association, but by a group of 4-stroke senior racers who wanted a different option.

The class will be based on the Tal-Ko TKM K4S engine, a high-revving 4-stroke that delivers 19 HP over a broad power band of 4,000 to 11,750 RPM.  Developed in Bedfordshire, England by former Cosworth engineers at Tal-Ko Racing Ltd., the durable K4S is a sealed engine and features an overhead cam, water-cooling and is able to achieve over 100 hours of service between rebuilds.  The TKM K4S can also be restricted to 15 and 17 HP for junior classes and comes complete with radiator and all hardware.

The TKM class is considered a mid-point class positioned between the Briggs World Formula 4-stroke senior and faster 2-cycle Rotax and ROK classes. Rather than competing with the high-profile 2-cycle classes, the TKM class will emphasize the same sportsmanship qualities that made the World Formula competitive but fun.  Lap times are expected to be in the 54 to 55 second range at Greg Moore Raceway.

For the 2011 racing season, the WCKC TKM class will compete for club championship points.  In addition, a number of prizes will be available to class participants.  While the prize awarding structure has yet to be determined, available prizes for the 2011 season will include:

  • A one-day Formula Race Car course at any of the Allen Berg Racing Schools valued at over $1600
  • A TKM Works racing suit provided by Alan Turney from Tal-Ko Racing, manufacturer of the TKM K4S engine
  • TKM K4S engine parts provided by Top Gear Race Management
  • TGRM clothing provided by Top Gear Race Management
  • Danny Kacic of CRG West has offered prizes as well

Highway Camera in Chilliwack shows weather around WCKC track

In around the valley the weather is often different and variable. I am sure all of have stayed home since we thought it was raining only to find out later it was great weather at the track.  Here is a link the the BC Highways Camera at Evans Rd in Chilliwack not far from the track.    Chilliwack Hightway Camera on Evans Rd. If someone has an outdoor camera to donate we could mount it on the tower with a live feed on our website to see the actual track.

Opportunity For Friends to Try Your Kart

WCKC nows permits its members who have purchased a practice pass to bring a guest that is not currently a kart racer to drive their kart at Greg Moore Raceway on Wednesday evenings, from 4 PM until closing. This experience is free of charge. The short track will be used because the “Try A Kart” program is also running at this time. A waiver form will need to be completed before the guest can go out on the track. There will be a maximum of ten karts allowed on the track during this time, as per WCKC rules and regulations.

Samuel O’Young

On behalf of CartBC and all of our karting members our condolences go out to the O’Young family for their loss. We have all lost a wonderful human being who has touched so many people in his years in motorsports.

Sam was always there to help anyone who asked. He had vision and drive and his son Daryl is a true testament of the man who set him on his journey as a young kart racer. Sam mentored a lot of people in our sport through the years and will be missed by all.

Sam, you can now race that perfect race for eternity, no more crashes, no more parts to buy and engines to rebuild into the wee hours of the night. You will remain a true champion forever, God Bless and God Speed!
